What does your job entail on a day-to-day basis and how does it help the wider team at Teledyne?
My product assurance role at Teledyne is slightly different to my previous roles; however, I have been able to bring a lot of my experience and skills from those positions into what I am doing now; to a different area of engineering and compliance.
I have been supporting the development of new technology for the business, not just detectors but electronics as well. Part of that includes looking into how our approach to product assurance around software development is managed. I spend a lot of time supporting the engineering and project teams to further understand what is needed to develop these types of products from a product assurance perspective.
My team and I also work to ensure that our documentation is at the right standard and our products are delivered to customers with the right supporting information and data in order to fulfil their requirements.
What’s the best part of your job for you?
Operating in the space sector is definitely exciting, as is working with customers such as ESA and NASA. My engineering colleagues are very knowledgeable, and I have learned a lot from them as well, which I am very grateful for. I really enjoy the learning side of it, especially looking into new areas for me, such as software.
You are working on the TRUTHS mission. Tell us about that.
TRUTHS is an important ESA mission that will set the ‘gold standard’ for climate measurements. It is also UK-led and I think that Teledyne’s involvement in the mission as a UK business exemplifies our capabilities as a leader in the global space industry.
Right now, we are in an early development phase. I'm working directly with various engineering teams to understand exactly what documentation needs to be written and in what format, to ensure that the right information is captured and delivered to customers.
This will help them understand what our architecture is and how our unit will be performing within the electronics board and how it will communicate with the rest of the system.
What else are you working on?
I am involved in a number of other ESA missions, as well as R&D projects which are exploring how we can better meet industry requirements in order to deliver products into new sectors of the industry.
How do you see your role evolving in the future?
I am still quite new to my role and am eager to learn and progress as much as I can. I want to take this role as far as I can and become involved with as many projects as possible - to become a knowledge source for what we do in product assurance.
People stay with Teledyne for many years due to our amazing colleagues and the skills and knowledge that are shared. Every day, it is a pleasure to come into work and have fascinating conversations with people who really know what they are doing and have a genuine passion for their work.
Has working at Teledyne Space Imaging deepened your interest in the space sector?
I am keen to learn as much as I can about space. I have watched several mission launch videos and followed the live streams. I have also started attending social clubs and discussion groups for people working in the industry, which is enabling me to meet some really interesting, supportive and friendly people. I really enjoy that and widening my social contacts and professional networks.
I am also attending a software product assurance conference at ESA in September, where I hope to meet other like-minded people in the industry.
You are also Chair of the Charities Committee at Teledyne in Chelmsford, UK. Can you tell us more about this?
The opportunity arose fairly early on in my employment here, and with a passion for supporting charities personally, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for me.
The committee organises internal events, like bake sales and football matches, to fundraise for local charities within Chelmsford - with our Core charity being Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust. Additionally, we support fundraising activities lead by our employees.
Currently I am personally supporting Farleigh Hospice’s Buzz in the City, where Teledyne is a headline sponsor of the event. It has been great to get to know the people involved with organising and supporting the event, coming up with great ideas to make it a real success for the local community.
